Website Content Audit & Restructuring

Simplifying a content-heavy website through collaborative review, reorganization, and accessibility improvements

The Challenge

Years of accumulated content had made an established professional organization's website increasingly difficult to organize and maintain. Although a new website template had been considered, budget constraints ultimately required the organization to improve the existing site within the limitations of its current platform.

The project also involved a significant number of stakeholders, each with different priorities for the website. Content needed to be evaluated, outdated material removed or revised, navigation simplified, and accessibility improved—all without rebuilding the site from scratch.

My Role

As the organization's website administrator since 2021, I had already been responsible for ongoing updates and improvements when a more comprehensive site review began.

I initially worked with a small volunteer group to review individual pages and make content decisions. For the larger website project, we developed a structured review process that allowed organizational leadership, committees, work groups, and other stakeholders to evaluate the sections relevant to them. Feedback and proposed changes were documented in a shared workbook, with individual sections for the site's major content areas.

I helped evaluate that feedback, identify platform limitations, resolve conflicting or impractical requests, and implement the approved changes. Working with organizational leadership, I then helped simplify the site's information architecture, reducing the main navigation from eight top-level sections to five and reorganizing content throughout the site to support the new structure.

I personally moved and reorganized the affected pages, updated content and formatting, and created a consistent graphic header treatment for individual pages.

Accessibility was also a key consideration throughout the project. I used multiple accessibility evaluation tools, including Accessibility Checker and WAVE, to identify issues and improve the site within the capabilities of the existing platform. My work included adding and improving alternative text, correcting contrast issues, improving link descriptions, standardizing body copy for readability, and reworking downloadable PDFs to better conform to accessibility standards.

Where the platform itself prevented full remediation—particularly in the way certain heading structures were generated—I identified and documented those limitations rather than introducing changes that could not be properly supported.

The Result

The updated website launched in its restructured form in 2025, with a simpler five-section primary navigation, reorganized and updated content, greater visual consistency, and improved accessibility throughout the site.

The project extended the useful life of the organization's existing website without requiring the cost of a new template, while creating a clearer structure that could continue to be maintained and updated over time.

I continue to manage the website and support its evolving content, programs, events, and communications.
